19 Years Ago Today, She Had No Idea What Was Coming

Today is my business’s 19th birthday. That feels pretty crazy to say since about 20% of new small businesses fail in their first year, and by the end of five years, nearly 50% have closed. After 10 years, that number rises to roughly 65%.

I recently came across a photo of myself from around that time, when I had just started my coaching business, was still working full-time in Corporate America, and was years away from meeting my husband. Such a baby! 😂

That girl was full of hope and dreams. She had a burning desire to inspire people and make her mark in the world, but no idea what lay ahead: the financial hardships, the dark nights of the soul, the many moments she’d consider giving up.

She also had no idea about the life waiting for her on the other side.

If I could reach back and whisper something to her, it would be simple:

“Keep going.”

Through the doubt.
Through the uncertainty.
Through the seasons when nothing seems to be working.

Keep going.

Because the freedom and growth you find, the kind you can feel in your body, is more profound than anything you could imagine sitting where you’re sitting right now.

Today, I’m writing this to you from the road as I overland through the western US, running Lucra® from wherever I happen to be. Twenty-eight-year-old me would not have imagined this lifestyle.

But here’s what I know now that she didn’t: freedom isn’t something you find at the finish line. It’s something you build, choice by choice, over years of showing up even when it’s hard. That’s what these 19 years have taught me.

I’m sending you a huge “thank you” for being here—some of you, from the beginning! 🙏🏼 What an honor to have so many awesome people in the Lucra community.
