Addicted to the How

Over the years, many of my coaching clients have grappled with the “how.”

  • HOW can I get to my goal? 🎯
  • HOW can I trace my story all the way back through my psychology? 🤔
  • HOW does co-creation work? 🌀
  • HOW did I end up in this mess? 🤯

There are better questions to ask to move forward in life.

One of my clients and I developed a protocol around this. We determined that he was “addicted to the how” so we acted like it was a real addiction.

If he was addicted to alcohol or nicotine for example, how would he go about changing his behavior?

The solution may be unique to each person, but some of the things he did were to:

  1. Notice his “cravings” for How and if they were serving as a distraction from something else.
  2. Pay attention to the people he was hanging out with and the way they talked and acted around going after their goals.
  3. Recognize the power he was giving to “how” and turn it over to a higher power instead.

So, very similar to how someone with an addiction might work toward lessening its hold on their life.

Oftentimes, we get stuck in the perfectionism of understanding every little detail instead of relying on our processes, procedures, routines, and rituals. These are the things that move the needle toward where we want to be.
